What happened at the school
Photos circulated by emergency workers showed students streaming from the school as ambulances operated at the scene. One image showed a person on a stretcher outside an ambulance, while another person was being treated by a medic.
An 18-year-old student told Reuters he initially thought the sounds were firecrackers or someone banging an object. He said there were several shots, followed by a pause, before the shooting began again.
Thailand’s wider school-shooting context
The shooting follows a February incident in which a teacher was killed and a student was injured after a gunman opened fire at a school in southern Thailand’s Hat Yai district.
In October 2022, a former police officer killed dozens of people, including children, in a gun and knife attack in Nong Bua Lamphu province. Thailand has tightened gun laws after mass shootings in recent years; illegal firearm possession carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years, and people seeking to buy a gun or renew a licence must undergo a medical evaluation.
