Hundreds of mourners gathered at Wat Lat Pla Duk in Nonthaburi province, north of Bangkok, for the funeral rites of Naphat Chaimar, the 12-year-old girl who was the youngest victim of last week’s school mass shooting.
Naphat’s parents accepted an apology from Nithi Yimruang, the father of the 14-year-old boy identified as the shooter. The teenager killed his grandparents, six other people and himself, while more than 30 people were injured.
An apology at the temple
Nithi arrived before prayers, dropped to his knees and bowed in the traditional wai gesture before Naphat’s parents. Her father, Pongthon Chaimar, helped him to his feet and accepted his apology. The parents told Nithi they understood that he was also facing a difficult time.
Nithi told the Guardian that he felt guilty and heartbroken after losing his son and parents. He said he still did not understand why his son had carried out the violence.

What happened to Naphat
Naphat had attended Debsirin Nonthaburi school for three months as part of its newest Grade 7 cohort. She was not normally in the building where the shooting occurred; according to a teacher, she had gone there with other students for a vaccination and was struck while leaving the room.
Her parents first repeatedly called her phone after learning of the shooting. An officer later told them she was in critical condition at Phranangklao hospital. Naphat died on Saturday, bringing the death toll to nine, including the attacker.
Royal patronage for victims’ families
The temple service was attended by the deputy prime minister, teachers, parents and friends. Wreaths from King Maha Vajiralongkorn, Queen Suthida, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and cabinet ministers surrounded Naphat’s coffin.

The palace announced on Sunday that the king had granted royal patronage for the victims, their families and relatives. Under the arrangement, injured people would be treated as patients under royal care, while royal sponsorship would cover funeral rites and cremations for those killed.
