Mitchell Starc leads Australia to innings win over Bangladesh

Mitchell Starc took 10 wickets in the match as Australia defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs in the second Test in Mackay, completing the victory in two days.

Australia bowled Bangladesh out for 64 in the first innings and 95 in the second. The result levelled the two-match series after Bangladesh won the opening Test by nine wickets in Darwin.

Starc leads a dominant bowling display

Starc took 6-12 in Bangladesh’s first innings and returned with 4-39 in the second. Pat Cummins claimed 3-10 in the second innings, while Nathan Lyon took 3-25.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto made 31 before Lyon dismissed him, while Litton Das was out without scoring. Taijul Islam’s dismissal gave Starc his 10th wicket of the match, the fourth time he has reached that mark. Lyon then completed the collapse in the first over after tea.

Australia build a 146-run lead

Australia resumed the second day at 165-8 and were dismissed for 210, with Cameron Green top-scoring with 67 and Lyon remaining unbeaten on 32. Josh Hazlewood added 24 for the final wicket.

Bangladesh fast bowler Shoriful Islam finished with 7-48, the best figures by a Bangladeshi bowler in an away Test, but Australia’s lead left the visitors under immediate pressure.

Bangladesh unable to repeat first-Test upset

Bangladesh entered the Mackay Test after defeating the world’s top-ranked team by nine wickets in Darwin. Australia’s fast bowling and the conditions in the second Test prevented another successful chase or sustained resistance.

Shanto said Bangladesh struggled with the bat in conditions offering extra bounce and swing. Cummins said Australia had responded after the previous week’s defeat and maintained its intensity throughout the match.
