Five people were killed and five others injured when Russia attacked Kamianske in Ukraine’s southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region on Saturday morning, regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said. The strike came after Ukrainian forces were reportedly ordered to observe a three-day ceasefire while US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travelled to Moscow and prepared to visit Kyiv.
Ukraine’s Armed Forces later said the temporary ceasefire did not need to be ordered on the front lines because Russia had continued its attacks overnight. The reported pause was scheduled to run from midnight on September 5 until 23:59 on September 8.
What happened during the reported pause
Ukrainian media reported that the ceasefire order covered operations on the ground, in the air and at sea. People’s Deputy Oleksiy Honcharenko said on Telegram that the military had confirmed receiving the order.
Interfax Ukraine reported that Russian attacks continued overnight. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had struck a civilian enterprise in Kamianske and carried out strikes on airports in Kyiv and Boryspil. - Odesa region: three people were injured, including a 17-year-old boy.
- Mykolaiv: a 17-year-old girl was injured in a drone attack on a shopping centre.
- Boryspil in the Kyiv region: two women were injured and hospitalised after a strike on a nine-storey residential building.
Separate nuclear-plant repair truce
The International Atomic Energy Agency said it had brokered a separate local ceasefire to allow repairs intended to restore external power to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

US envoys’ diplomatic schedule
Witkoff and Kushner were due in Moscow on Saturday and Sunday, according to Russian state news agency TASS, and were expected in Ukraine on Sunday. Their proposal was described as an effort to end the war.
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that a peace deal remained elusive because of what he called a personality problem between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
