Trump and Putin hold frank call as peace efforts resume

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke for about an hour on Tuesday about the war in Ukraine, according to Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, Yury Ushakov. Ushakov described the conversation as “constructive and quite frank” as Washington renewed efforts to pursue a peace deal.

What Putin conveyed on the war

Ushakov said Putin gave Trump an assessment of Russia’s military campaign, including Moscow’s plans to advance its objectives on the battlefield. He also said Putin rejected concerns that Russia could launch attacks elsewhere in Europe, including against NATO members, telling reporters that Russia had “no aggressive plans regarding Europe.” For additional context, see “Kushner and Witkoff meet Zelenskyy in Kyiv as peace efforts intensify”.

The call followed meetings with Ukraine and Russia

The conversation came days after US special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff separately met Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Ushakov said the leaders discussed the outcome of those visits and that “very good, worthwhile ideas” had been presented.

The meetings did not produce a breakthrough to end the fighting. A brief pause for negotiations was followed by renewed strikes. Ukrainian officials said attacks on Tuesday killed at least five civilians and wounded 25 in Kyiv. Russian officials reported three people killed and 13 wounded in Bryansk and Kursk, while local authorities in Russian-annexed Crimea reported about five deaths from Ukrainian attacks. What happens next

Ukrainian officials say Trump and Zelenskyy are expected to meet later in the month. The development of this issue can be followed in “Ukraine seeks halt to Russian air attacks during peace talks”.
