Forces affiliated with Yemen’s internationally recognised government retook positions and advanced in western Taiz on Sunday after repelling a Houthi offensive, according to reporting from Taiz and a source in the government forces.
The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, said on Monday that they had launched attacks on military facilities and infrastructure in Saudi Arabia with ballistic missiles and drones. Saudi Arabia had not immediately commented on the claim.
Air strikes and reported targets
A source in the government forces said the advance was supported by air strikes on Houthi gatherings. The reported bombing has included areas on Yemen’s west coast around Mocha and Dhubab. Read the context: Houthi forces say they have seized Mocha as Yemen fighting widens.
The Houthis said their claimed attacks targeted facilities at King Khalid airbase in Khamis Mushait, including aircraft hangars, radar installations, runways and ammunition depots. The group described the attacks as a response to a Saudi offensive.
Fighting spreads around the Red Sea
Yemen’s more than decade-long civil war reignited in July, putting at risk a United Nations-brokered truce that halted large-scale violence in 2022. The Houthis had declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia and begun targeting ships in the Red Sea.
Clashes intensified last week after the Houthis captured parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coast and strengthened their position around the Bab al-Mandeb. The Associated Press, citing Yemeni government and Houthi officials, reported that Houthi fighters were deployed on Greater Hanish and Lesser Hanish islands, about 86 nautical miles north of the strait.
Displacement and border movement
The International Organization for Migration said fighting in recent weeks had displaced nearly 86,000 people. It said some displaced people were leaving Yemen, including more than 2,000 who reached neighbouring Djibouti.
Saudi Arabia’s civil defence agency issued alerts on Sunday for Abha and the area around Khamis Mushait. The alerts were lifted shortly afterward.
