Fenway Sports Group has agreed to sell 30% of Liverpool to 1892 Holdings, a consortium including Amit Bhatia, Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin, in a deal understood to be worth £1.65bn and valuing the club at £5.5bn.
Bhatia will become Liverpool’s vice-chair on an expanded board, while FSG will remain the club’s majority owner and retain operational control. The investment is subject to regulatory approval, which could take up to 90 days.
Who is joining Liverpool’s board
Bhatia initiated and led the talks with FSG on behalf of 1892 Holdings. He is the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal and previously held several roles at Queens Park Rangers before transferring his shareholding in July.
Elaine Saverin, Eduardo Saverin’s wife, and Bryan Baum, co-founder and managing partner of K5 Global, will also join Liverpool’s board. Bezos is described as a passive investor and will not have a board seat.
What changes for FSG and Liverpool
The transaction will not change Liverpool’s leadership or day-to-day running, and it will not affect the club’s transfer budget or strategy for this summer. FSG said the deal is not part of an exit strategy and does not require either side to increase or sell more of its stake later.
The agreement does give 1892 Holdings options to buy more of Liverpool if FSG eventually decides to sell. FSG’s John W Henry, Tom Werner and Mike Gordon spent almost a year getting to know Bhatia before agreeing to the investment.
Why the investment matters financially
Liverpool’s spending remains linked to turnover by Premier League and Uefa financial regulations, so the investment will not provide an immediate boost to the team. FSG expects the consortium’s business connections to create opportunities in global business, technology and investment, particularly in India and Asia.
Liverpool’s annual revenue reached a record £703m for the year ending May 2025. FSG said the consortium’s makeup, rather than a need for financing, was central to its decision to accept Bhatia’s proposal.
