Chris Wright says diplomacy with Iran may give way to strikes

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said on Sunday that there may not be a nuclear agreement with Iran, raising the prospect that the United States could focus on destroying Iranian capabilities linked to developing nuclear infrastructure.

Speaking to ABC News, Wright said a deal could still be possible under a future Iranian administration, but added that “we simply don’t know that.” Iran says its nuclear programme is for peaceful power generation and denies plans to build a nuclear weapon.

Military action remains part of the US approach

When asked whether the United States would continue bombing instead of pursuing diplomacy, Wright defended US actions and said the goal was to reduce Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons and, ultimately, deliver them if they were developed. For additional context, see “Chris Wright says Iran nuclear agreement may not be possible”.

The United States has previously targeted facilities it said supported Iran’s nuclear programme. Wright said the effort would continue in cooperation with regional allies and suggested other countries could participate.

Attacks resumed after diplomacy collapsed

The memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran collapsed in July. Attacks then paused before resuming, alongside Iranian closures of the Strait of Hormuz and a US naval blockade. Recent exchanges of intense fire have continued while White House officials have publicly played down the conflict. President Donald Trump called it “small potatoes” on Friday, while Vice President JD Vance said this week that he would not call it a war and that there was no active shooting at that point.
